Developing global research roadmaps for alternatives to antimicrobials in animal health: a participatory expert-driven approach

Abstract

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global challenge threatening the health of humans, animals, plants and the environment. As highlighted by the UN-convened ad hoc Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance and the World Organisation of Animal Health (formerly the Office International des Epizooties, OIE), the development and use of alternatives to antimicrobials (ATAs) for use in food animals will play a crucial role in supporting farmers and veterinarians to reduce the use of antimicrobials and combat AMR. STAR IDAZ International Research Consortium (IRC) on Animal Health has utilised a participatory, expert-driven approach to develop research roadmaps for the development of ATAs to support strategic alignment of research investments and facilitate faster delivery of safe and effective ATAs. Results: Through a series of expert consultations, workshops and online consultations from 2019–2022, STAR IDAZ IRC engaged with over 75 experts worldwide to carry out gap analysis activities and develop research roadmaps for the development of ATAs and associated research priorities. The challenge of taking new ATAs to market was broached with strong industry engagement. The participatory approach utilised by STAR IDAZ IRC is a strategic enabler to creating trust and engagement among stakeholders, to facilitate and maximise impact across the research and innovation chain. Conclusion: The roadmaps provide a robust foundation for strategic animal health research investment and collective action; they are referenced in global strategies and support global commitments to contribute to sustainable solutions to the AMR challenge.
