Abstract

Bangladesh's coastline along the Bay of Bengal has a lot of potential for sustainable development because it has a lot of marine resources. Understanding the ocean and its connection to human life, commonly referred to as ocean literacy, is essential for communities to manage these resources responsibly. This study explored ocean literacy among 160 residents of Cox’s Bazar using surveys and focus group discussions to capture their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to marine ecosystems. The findings reveal that while people are aware of the ocean’s importance for livelihoods and biodiversity, many lack understanding of its role in climate regulation, oceanic health, and lesser-known marine processes. Communities show strong engagement in activities such as alternative transportation and plant-based diets, yet practices such as energy and water conservation are less consistent. Most participants gain their knowledge from social media and informal channels rather than formal education, highlighting a gap in structured learning. Strengthening ocean literacy through school curricula and community programs can empower citizens, support sustainable management of coastal resources, and drive progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh while building a resilient Blue Economy that balances economic growth with ecological protection.
