Wow! Signal Gravitational Redshift Analysis & Origin Hypothesis
Abstract
This research proposes that the 1977 Wow! Signal may have undergone gravitational redshift caused by a massive astrophysical object such as a black hole. By applying Einstein’s gravitational redshift equation to candidates within 2000 light-years — specifically Gaia BH1 — the study finds that a signal originally transmitted at approximately 1853.38 MHz would be observed as 1420.4556 MHz, matching the frequency of the Wow! Signal. A Bayesian inference model is then applied, incorporating directional data, redshift plausibility, signal duration, frequency anomalies, and repetition behavior. The result is a posterior probability of 62.5% in favor of an artificial origin. An original signal evaluation formula (SWow) is also introduced, integrating astrophysical and artificial signal traits into a structured framework. This independent study, conducted by a non-institutional researcher, offers a reproducible method for assessing unexplained radio signals and contributes to the ongoing SETI dialogue from a novel perspective.
